Our Doula Program

The Birth in Color Doula Collective is comprised of over 100 community-based doulas (and counting) Our doula certification requirements are based on evidence-based information and are informed by decades of experience.

Location Based Care

Our doulas serve every corner of our state, with cohorts of doulas in and around Richmond, Henrico, Hampton Roads, the Eastern Shore, Lynchburg, Farmville, Danville, Roanoke, Martinsville, and the DMV.

The Birth in Color Doula Project is able to accept pregnant people of any identity; people of color and those with Medicaid are encouraged to apply for care.

APPLICANTS MUST READ:

  • Doula Care includes 4 prenatal visits, 4 postpartum visits, phone/text support, and birth attendance by a Birth in Color Doula.

  • Applicants will receive an email within 7-10 business days of applying letting them know whether or not they have been accepted into The Birth in Color Doula Project to receive Doula Care.

  • Applicants must check their spam folders for emails from Birth in Color.

  • Applicants MUST INDICATE ACCEPTANCE within 48 hours!

  • If an acceptance reply is not received, applicants are subject to removal from the program.

  • If acceptance is received by Birth in Color an assigned Doula will contact the applicant within 48 hours using the preferred form of contact.

  • If the doula does not receive a response from the applicant within 48 hours, they will be removed from the program.

  • Birth in Color will send you important updates via email and information via text messages to the contact information you provide on your application. You can unsubscribe at any time and you will still receive messages via regarding your doula care and services.

  • The Birth in Color Doula Collective is a community-based group of doulas and birth care workers that provide culturally competent support to pregnant individuals (and their colorful families) during their pregnancy and childbirth journey. Our network of experienced professionals are dedicated to supporting you throughout this transformative experience.

  • To apply for doula services, please select the appropriate form on our website based on your location. Complete the form with the required information, and ensure prompt communication with Birth in Color, as your acceptance into the program depends on it.

  • Yes, if you find that you are not connecting well with your assigned doula, you have the option to request a new doula. We understand that not every connection is perfect, and we want to ensure that you feel comfortable and supported. You can use our doula change request form for this purpose.

  • If you have concerns about the care provided by your doula or any other issues, we encourage you to use our doula change request form. You can request a new doula, or you can use the form to bring specific concerns to our attention without requesting a new doula. Find here.

  • Unfortunately, we cannot accept anonymous submissions on the doula change request form. We need to know your identity and who your current doula is to facilitate the process of assigning you to a new doula or addressing your concerns effectively.

  • Clients are allowed one opportunity to change their doula during their care with Birth in Color, with exceptions only for urgent or emergent matters. Please use this opportunity thoughtfully.

  • If you have stopped communicating with your initial doula or have missed/rescheduled more than one visit with your first assigned doula, you will not receive a new doula assignment.

  • Doula changes are not allowed if you were removed from the community-based doula program, or if you had a Birth in Color doula and a doula from another collective/cohort/business/independent doula at the same time and then requested to return to the Birth in Color community-based doula program.

  • The doula care package includes 2 prenatal visits, 2 postpartum visits, phone/text support, and birth attendance by a Birth in Color Doula.
