    This Summer, Birth in Color is offering a Policy Fellowship for a current college student, recent graduate, or graduate student. This fellow will be involved in the policy and advocacy work of Birth in Color and embark on their own research and implementation project, supervised and trained by our executive director and director of policy.

    Applicants for this fellowship should be interested in reproductive justice, Black maternal health, and have a basic understanding of the political landscape in Virginia surrounding these topics. This fellowship can lead to a full-time position with Birth in Color at the completion of the fellowship.

    This fellow will be a part of the prep work before Virginia General Assembly, advocacy, social media, updates, other policy research and projects, and the ongoing policy work of Birth in Color throughout the summer.

    Responsibilities:

    • Assist with preparations for General Assembly

    • Work closely with the Director of Policy on research regarding the political landscape of Virginia and provide regular reports to BIC staff with any updates or changes

    • Help create social media posts, website updates, emails regarding policy news in Virginia

    • Create clear informational materials regarding reproductive justice

    Since our founding in 2018, we’ve been on a mission to bring cultural inclusivity to the forefront of Maternal Health Reproductive Justice narratives. Through community events, workshops, and steadfast policy efforts, we're working to redefine what maternal health means for families of color.

    Birth in Color is a birth, policy, and advocacy non-profit focused on raising awareness surrounding maternal health and reproductive justice. We provide services for birthing Black people, people of color, and those with Medicaid and want to change the narrative of Black maternal health.

    Birth in Color provides culturally-centered support to pregnant people, their families, and birthing communities to ensure a safe birth and make better decisions for their children. Our services range from providing expert birth workers, doulas, and lactation consultants for expecting people, to prenatal classes and racial bias training for reproductive healthcare workers.

    Marketing and Communications Coordinator Job Description

    Overview

    Birth in Color is looking for a driven and excited Marketing and Communications Coordinator to support our dynamic and growing organization. This is a great opportunity to work at a community-based nonprofit organization and engage with the community, our clients, and policy-makers.

    Responsibilities

    • Internal and External Communications: Clearly and effectively communicate information about Birth in Color, updates related to the doula collective, reproductive justice advocacy, client-facing programs and doula services, and training opportunities. Draft and distribute monthly newsletters and regular updates to supporters, mailing list, and community.

    • Marketing and Awareness: Develop marketing strategy and rollout campaigns for programs and the organization. Analyze outreach efficacy and demonstrate flexibility to fine-tune marketing strategies.

    • Press and News Collaborations: Connect and collaborate with press, journalists, and local publications to share time-sensitive updates, events, and newsworthy information. Draft and distribute press releases.

    • Evidence and Research-Based Blog and Presentation Development: Stay up-to-date on reproductive justice news, research evidence-based information to include and share with Birth in Color-related updates, generate blog articles in collaboration with BIC team members, and develop presentations and materials that effectively communicate important information and topics.

    • Storytelling: Responsibly, ethically, and effectively collect and share client stories with readers, supporters, and stakeholders.

    Schedule

    The Marketing and Communications Coordinator will work together with the Executive Director to establish a consistent full-time schedule, with the possibility of a hybrid-model schedule dependent on remote work experience.

    Responsibilities

    • Grassroots Client Recruitment including: recruiting new clients through in-person outreach, personal visits, and phoning; organizing house meetings; planning community awareness activities; and increasing clients’ involvement and investment.

    • Leadership Development / Training of grassroots leaders and members to develop skills, including: volunteer recruitment, facilitation, public speaking, and organizational development.

    • Political Education of grassroots leaders and members on our work in maternal health and reproductive justice; develop activities to deepen understanding of the issues we address as well as the political landscape surrounding our policy campaigns at the state and local level.

    • Direct Action Campaign Development and Implementation including: assisting in the development of outreach campaign strategy and plans; coordinating campaign activities and actions; represent and train grassroots leaders to represent the organization in campaign meetings with policymakers and media.

    • Department planning and Administration including: Plan outreach and organizing, rigorous tracking and reporting of ongoing work and results.

    • Work together with the Director of Communications in the Development of Organizing Materials: Including presentations, fliers,, fact sheets, pledge cards, etc.

    • Work together with the Fundraising Coordinator to create Grassroots Fundraising through and developing leaders to raise funds.

    Schedule

    Due to the hybrid nature of the position, the Community Organizer will work together with the Executive Director to establish a consistent part-time schedule.

    Meetings

    • The Community Organizer is expected to have weekly virtual meetings to check in on task progress, ask questions, and manage roll efficiently.

    • The Community Organizer is expected to have regular contact with new and existing community partners, community members, and clients to develop and maintain relationships between Birth in Color RVA and partner organizations.

    Responsibilities

    • Doula Collective Management: Manage the membership of contracted doulas through internal communications (update emails, group posts and announcements, cohort meetings, etc.)

    • Client Programs Organization and Development: Schedule, coordinate, and manage Birth in Color classes, workshops, and support groups. Develop and coordinate new programs based on client needs.

    • Evaluation: Create surveys and systems to effectively evaluate Birth in Color client programs.

    • Communication: Work together with the Director of Communications and Marketing and the Social Media Manager to develop clear and effective program descriptions and language to disseminate to clients, community members, doulas, care providers, and stakeholders.
